Journalism

Over the past 15 years, my 6,000-plus articles have appeared in magazines, newspapers, books and newsletters around the globe.

I specialize in a few key areas: the environment, cutting-edge technology, entrepreneurship, creativity and acts of kindness. But if it's fun or important, I'll write about almost anything.

My column about endangered species, Extinction Countdown, appears a few times a week over at Scientific American. I founded what was first called Extinction Blog in 2004, making it the world's first (and still the longest-running) news source devoted entirely to endangered species. After a year on my own, Extinction Blog was published for three years by Plenty Magazine and has now been at Scientific American for another four. During that time, I have published more than than 1,200 articles about endangered species!

I write about a variety of other environmental topics, most often for Mother Nature Network.

On the technology side, I specialize in two key areas: covering cutting-edge science for the non-technical community and giving the people in that same community the information they need to manage their careers. You can find my work in most issues of Today's Engineer and frequently at IEEE's The Institute. Other clients in this area have included the career sites Experience.com and The Ladders.

Other current and past clients include Lion magazine, Conservation magazine, Tonic.com, the IEEE Communications Society and Standards Association, SmartBrief, Avian Welfare, Kyoto Planet, the Asbury Park Press, Governing and dozens of other publications.

Want to read some of my work? You can find links to all of my recent articles (plus quite a few old ones) over at the John Platt Article Library.
